AFFORDABLE HOUSING PLAN

The term “affordable housing” is a broad term that encompasses many middle-income working families with good jobs who nevertheless struggle to buy or rent decent housing at an affordable price. HousingNOLA, a local affordable housing advocacy organization, released a report in 2015, which estimated that 33,000 new housing units at all income levels are needed by 2025 to keep up with demand.

The most striking fact of the New Orleans economy today is how far behind we are in securing for our people the good jobs that lead to a decent income. My key economic goal will be to raise the median wage in New Orleans to the national standard. Across the city, in every neighborhood, our destinies are linked. This priority has to be a top priority for businesses, non-profits, government, labor, and everyone who can make a difference.

The strategy: Start immediately and work simultaneously for the long term. This is a comprehensive five-year plan to address crime and public safety with a holistic approach that includes both immediate action items and directly addresses the long-term root causes of crime.
